Profile of our Principal, Bruce Rixon

 

Bruce was born in the rural town of Dorrigo, NSW where he commenced his schooling. Identified at an early age for his music skills, he transferred to St Andrew’s Cathedral School, Sydney at the age of 10 to join the choir and complete his schooling. He was Head Chorister of this famous Cathedral choir which became a focal point to launch his career in music. Specialising in voice, piano and musicology Bruce studied at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music gaining his Associate, Licentiate and Fellowship in singing, piano and musicianship preparing him for a career in Opera. However his private teaching practice grew considerably and from a love of teaching it became apparent this was to be his career path. 

Bruce held the position of Director of Music and Head of Creative and Performing Arts at Oakhill College, Castle Hill (7-12), Marian College, Kenthurst (7-12), St. Andrew’s Cathedral School, Sydney (K-12), Saint Ignatius’ College, Riverview (5-12). His most recent position was Director of Activities at Shore SCEGS, North Sydney (K-12).  

Bruce has enlivened each of his teaching posts with a strong commitment to the growth of music through the foundation of choirs, bands, orchestras, numerous small ensembles, musicals, production of CDs as well as state and international music tours. His choirs have performed in the United Kingdom, France and Austria with the Vienna Boys Choir, as well as Italy including St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican City. 

Professionally he has performed on Sydney Radio and TV, at the Sydney Opera House, Town Hall and Recital Hall as a soloist and conductor working with members of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and SBS Orchestra. He has musically directed and conducted many professional and amateur musicals in leading Sydney venues. 

Bruce is a keen sportsman with a particular fondness for cricket. He is a Level 2 Coach from the Australian Cricket Academy has coached many junior and 1st XI school boy teams, NSW U17 and U19 School boy teams. He was manager with a NSW U15 team that toured India in 2006. 

Bruce holds a Bachelor of Education (B.ED), Master of Education (M.Ed) and is currently reading his Doctorate in Education with a focus on leadership and spirituality of adolescents. He is most interested in the opportunity to serve others and has been involved in a number of immersion programmes both within Australia, India, Cambodia, Hong Kong (Crossroads) and Africa. 

Bruce has a strong affiliation with the church as youth leader, Warden and now communicant at St. Mary’s Busselton. 

Bruce is married to Jennie and has three sons Adam, Mitchell and Jarrod. Bruce and Jennie have relocated from Sydney to become the second Principal of Georgiana Molloy Anglican School, July 2007.
